Lynden native Derek Som, who has 16 years of food-service experience, has been named executive chef at the Best Western PLUS Lakeway Inn & Conference Center in Bellingham. 



Som is directing all culinary operations at the Lakeway Inn, including Poppes360 Neighborhood Pub, The Oboe Café, room service, and on and off-site catering. Som’s culinary background includes graduating from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school and earning a bachelor’s degree in food science from Central Washington University.
 
 




“We’re emphasizing Northwest fusion cooking, making food from scratch and using local sustainable foods like fish, fruit and vegetables,” Som said. “We will be changing our menus to offer seasonal items from the area that will give our hotel guests and locals a variety of regional and healthy choices”.


 
 
 










General Manager Larry MacDonald is very excited to have Chef Derek on the Lakeway team. “Chef Derek has already made contributions to our standards, as well as being active immediately in our great community,” MacDonald said. “We are already gaining feedback from our guests on the changes to the menu.
